There are many rituals and traditions that are
important to schools and universities when it comes to showing support for
their school and their sports programs. But none seem as important as the
tailgate.
Tailgating has been around for decades. From
colleges all over the nation, to NFL teams; tailgating has become a crucial
ritual. It’s become an integral event for fans to join together and show
support for their school/team. In fact, the whole tailgating experience has
somewhat become an event that is as anticipated as some of the games and events
themselves.
Since UTSA is a fairly new sports program, it hasn’t
had much time for students and fans to build many traditions. That’s why it is
important for students to participate in as many events as they can to help
build a student body reputation. But the one ritual/tradition that UTSA has
begun to partake in as well as make a name for its self is the tailgate.
In the past 3 seasons since UTSA first got its
football program, the students and alumni have started their own tailgating
ritual. But since UTSA doesn’t have their own stadium yet, it’s been difficult
to build up a big enough following. The Roadrunners currently plays their games
at the semi-abandoned Alamodome which is nearly 20 miles away from the
main-campus.
But that hasn’t stopped the diehard fans of UTSA
from gathering outside the Alamodome in the parking lots every weekend to show
their support for the university and its sports programs. Hundreds of UTSA students
and fans join together and show theirs school spirit by partaking in games (corn-hole,
etc.), grilling food, and socializing with each other.
Though tailgating is usually only associated with football
and UTSA’s football season appears to be over for the year, that doesn’t mean
that fans can’t get together and show their support for the other sports
programs of UTSA.
So get out there and show your support for the University of Texas at San Antonio. Go to the basketball games. Go root for the women's volley ball team. Show your team spirit at the pep rallies. Or just wear your UTSA apparel when your out and about. Just a little bit of school spirit can go a long way.
